Current SharePoint Navigation tab does not get highlighted

Posted in Sharepoint by Abhishek Bhowmick on June 26, 2010

You set up your Top Link Bar or Global Navigation for your SharePoint site with multiple links both internal and external and when being accessed the current Navigation tab does not get highlighted.

We create a New Link in your Top Link Bar. (For publishing feature enabled sites, it would mean Global Navigation)

We enter the absolute URL of the link something like http://<web-application-name>/sites/<site-collection-name>/<subsite>/default.aspx

(refer screenshot with an example)

When you access the link you still have the highlight on Parent tab and not the current/destination tab.

Now modify the URL in the Top Link Bar and remove the <web-application-name> and keep it as something like /sites/<site-collection-name>/<subsite>/default.aspx

(refer screenshot with an example)

Now when accessing the links the current tab highlights correctly.

    Thank you!!
I’ve been trying to find an easy way to do this for quite some time (some of the “solutions” I found had me messing with JavaScript)
Long story short – all of the previous methods failed where yours WORKED BEAUTIFULLY.

    Good stuff!

Another gotcha seems to be when you have spaces in your urls.

For example /Publications/Forms/AllItems.aspx works fine but
    /Tech%20Publications/Forms/AllItems.aspx not so much

yes, but if you remove the URL encoding (i.e. /Tech Publications/Forms/AllItems.aspx) it will work fine.
